Here is a clarification on how the unit works.

The sensor transmits immediately when water status changes. For example, if you dip the sensor in water, the base unit will sound an alarm right away. Then if you remove the sensor from water, the base unit will go back to normal status immediately. When there is no change in status, the sensor transmits once every 10 minutes. So after a power failure, it will take up to 10 minutes for the base unit to sync up with the remote sensor. You do not have to manually sync (by dipping the sensor in a cup of water as described in another review).

By only trasnmitting every 10 minutes, the battery lasts for long time. But by transmitting immediately upon water status change, you are quickly notified of water alarm. It's a nice design.

I've had this for a while now but wanted to wait till it actually got used to review it. The basement floods during a heavy summer downpour and the downspouts get clogged. Recently all the factors converged to cause water to enter the basement. I had forgotten about the Water Alert and heard the faint beeping of the unit. After a short search, I found the source of the sound and checking the basement, found water in the floor. Quick use of the shop vac avoided any damage. My only complaint is the volume of the alarm and the fact that it will alarm for some time after the clean up, sensing the overly damp condition of the floor. You have to unplug it until the floor dries. Just remember to plug it up again. Overall, works well.

I got this unit to keep track of any water leakage in the basement. The wireless operation is a big plus because I was able to set the sensor up in the basement and have the receiver unit upstairs on the first floor where I would be able to hear the beeper when it went off. Our old water alarm just had a wire hanging from it so it had to be placed within six feet of the water area and sometimes we would hear the beeper going off in the basement and sometimes not.
It was easy to set up this unit and the instructions were pretty clear. I am not sure if the range of the remote pickup is as much as they claim, since my receiver had a little trouble picking up the sensor's signal and it's only about 50 feet away from the sensor (basement to first floor ...and we don't have a big house). But it seems to be working now and I like the convenience of having the beeper in the first floor area plus the uncomplicated instructions. I'm a technophobe and even I can use it!
